Even though fluoride is necessary to prevent tooth decay, Dr. Katz from Purcellville, VA suggests too much fluoride given to infants and children can amount to fluorosis. Fluorosis is a harmless dental condition which is characterized by brown, mottled or discolored enamel. Most breast milk and ready-to-feed formulas contain infant-safe levels of fluoride, however, formulas that require water can increase this level since community or well sources usually contain the highest amount of fluoride proven to be beneficial in preventing tooth decay. When using formula that requires water, Dr. Katz recommends using bottled water that is low in fluoride or fluoride free or filtrated tap water. If you notice brown spots on your children’s teeth, call our office at (703)478-9574 for an appointment or visit Dr. Katz to check for fluorosis. If fluorosis is corrected in primary teeth, fluorosis will not likely be a problem when permanent teeth surface.

Following a teeth whitening procedure, Dr. Abe Katz will advise you to watch what you eat since many types of food and drink can stain your teeth. Consumption of products such as tobacco, soy sauce, soft drinks and wine will eventually stain teeth, thus consumption should be limited or avoided if white teeth are desired. However, there are certain foods and drinks that can actually help you maintain white teeth. For example, firm fruits such as apples, green beans, cauliflower, carrots and celery will scrub your teeth while you chew as well as promote the flow of saliva which protects teeth. Dairy products high in calcium will keep teeth white and the lactic acid in those products will help prevent tooth decay. Call Dr. Abe Katz today at (703)478-9574 to schedule an appointment and keep your teeth radiant and healthy.

Dr. Katz of Purcellville, VA recommends starting an oral regimen on children even before teeth appear by wiping a baby’s gums or using a baby toothbrush and water. As toddlers, it is a good time to begin brushing and flossing since teeth are in contact with each other and can begin to develop bacteria as well as plaque. Considering not all children need their teeth flossed at this age, it is a good idea to ask Dr. Katz for advice. When children reach age two, foster them to brush their own teeth, but make sure to follow up to make sure they are clean. Using fun games or a themed toothbrush can make children more willing to follow a positive oral hygiene routine.

The term accelerated orthodontics refers to that branch of dentistry that corrects irregularities in the teeth and, traditionally, metal braces have been used, as some of us may remember from our teenage years. No question, it’s a dental specialty and, when appropriate, your dentist will refer you to his or her network of skilled health professionals.
After your personalized consultation with your dentist, you may be a perfect candidate for porcelain veneers, bonding, or crowns in place of braces. Instead of using braces to physically move the teeth’s positions in the gums, a quick solution is to use veneers or crowns to give the appearance of straight, even teeth. The teeth being treated are sculpted and shaped so as to fit under the veneers or crowns, and the porcelain used is matched to the color of the surrounding, natural teeth. The veneers and crowns are bonded firmly to the existing teeth and are very long lasting. The result is a new and more attractive smile.

Does the thought of having your teeth worked on make you anxious or uncomfortable? Does the sight of needles and the sound of dental drills make you cringe? Now imagine if you could have everything done while you nap comfortably and awake to not remembering anything from the procedure. By the use of intravenous sedation, we can do this for you. The doctors at Dentistry by Design are trained sedation dentistry specialists and have been helping people overcome these fears for many years.
Since sedation is not for everyone, we also offer Nitrous Oxide treatment. Nitrous Oxide is commonly referred to as “Laughing Gas”. This mild sedative inhalant will put you in an euphoric state of relaxation and will help make the dental procedures much easier for you to handle.
We understand that going to the dentist can be very difficult for some people. Dental phobia is actually a lot more common than you may think. It is estimated that about 15% of Americans avoid going to the dentist because of this reason.
If you would like more information on sedation dentistry or Nitrous Oxide treatment, please contact our offices. Or if you would like to set up a Platinum Care appointment today, please visit our Appointment page. Don’t let dental phobia control you!

White Composite Fillings provide a tooth colored filling vs. amalgam fillings. White composite fillings are a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium that produces a tooth-colored filling. They are sometimes referred to as composites or filled resins. Composite fillings provide good durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid size restorations that need to withstand moderate chewing pressure. Less tooth structure is removed when the dentist prepares the tooth, and this may result in a smaller filling than that of an amalgam. Composites can also be “bonded” or adhesively held in a cavity, often allowing the dentist to make a more conservative repair to the tooth. Dr. Abe Katz DDS in Herdon VA can provide expert white composite fillings for your teeth.

Oral Appliance Therapy
The various oral appliances used by Dr. Katz for patients in the Herndon area are similar to a sports mouthguard or an orthodontic retainer. They are custom-fit for each patient, and constructed of soft, comfortable acrylic. The appliance fits over the upper and lower teeth. Its function is to hold the lower jaw forward so the tongue and soft tissues of the throat do not collapse into the throat causing snoring and sleep apnea. The device is easy to place and remove, easy to clean, and is convenient for travel.
For patients with mild sleep apnea, these devices are generally effective in providing relief in 75% of patients. For patients with moderate sleep apnea, these devices are 60% effective. And, for patients with severe sleep apnea, there is a 40% effective rate. Dr. Katz works closely with sleep medicine physicians in his area who provide overall diagnosis and treatment plans. Dr. Katz offers a variety of oral appliances to meet your specific needs in a comfortable, caring environment. These devices are easily adjusted to find and maintain the best fit. Patients often experience immediate improvement in their sleep. Oral Appliance Therapy is easily tolerated, and is recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as a first-line treatment choice for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Following are just some of the benefits:
• Easily Adjusted: Oral Appliances are easily adjusted, making it comfortable and maintaining the best fit.
• Immediate results: Most patients experience relief the very first night the device is worn.
• Easy to tolerate: Nine in ten patients wear the device all night, every night—making oral appliances a highly effective solution for both snoring and sleep apnea.
• Simple Solution: With oral appliance therapy, there is no need for surgery, CPAP or medication.

Do you have your Costco card?
Odd question coming from a dentist but the right answer might someday save you from big traveling problems with the TSA.
In June, I attended the AADSM (American association of Dental Sleep Medicine 2oth year Convention) in Minneapolis Minnesota. I was attending the convention to begin to fulfill the requirments needed for acquiring diplomat status in dental sleep medicine. There are over 20 million Americans suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and who cannot wear a CPAP breathing device prescribed to them to alleviate there problem. Dentistry now offers alternatives to CPAP machines that provide comfort and ease in treating the disorder.
When I arrived at my hotel I was asked for Photo I.D. and a credit card to register. I had a credit card but no Photo I.D.. I had kept my boarding pass from the flight to Minneapolis and convinced the hotel that I was who I said I was. If I was allowed on the plane, I must have had a photo I.D. to validate who I am.
Before I went to the meeting, I called motor vehicles in Virginia and I was fortunate enough to get someone very helpful who sent me a copy of my Drivers license by e-mail. What a relief. With that behind me, I was now calm enough to attend some great seminars and presentations at the AADSM convention.
After 3 days of classes, demonstrations and enjoying the company of old acquantances, I packed my bag and took the hotel shuttle to the airport for my flight back to Virginia. As I approached The TSA agent at the security counter to get to my gate, I was asked for my photo I.D.. I handed over a copy of my drivers license.
This is useless I was told. It’s not a valid photo identification. ‘Don’t you have any other I.D.. I had credit cards, medical insurance cards, my professional cards membership cards to dental organizations but no photo I.D..
“Do you a Costco card, a Costco card would be considered a valid I.D” I was told. But here’s a copy of my drivers license from the State of Virginia. Anyone can get a costco card how was a Costco card more valid then a copy of my drivers license.
I suddenly had visions of being stuck in Minneapolis with nowhere to go because I didn’t have a photo I.D. and worse not even a Costco card.
Fortunately for me, there was a young fellow behind me who had the same problem with less I.D. then I had and was making a scene on top of it. After some momentary questioning by the TSA agent I was allowed to go through security. They had their hand full with the other unhappy and unfortunate passenger.
Needless to say, I learned my lesson. Always keep an extra photo identification with you when you travel and a Costco card is a definite must.

Treatment for Sleep Apnea
Mild cases of sleep apnea may be treated by implementing several lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, changing your diet, drinking less alcohol, or quitting smoking. For more severe cases, Dr. Katz can offer several treatment methods to help you breathe properly while sleeping.
Dr. Katz may fit you with an oral appliance called the SomnoDent MAS™. This device is precision-made and custom-fit for your mouth. It resembles a sports mouthpiece and covers your upper and lower teeth. The SomnoDent MAS™ places your lower jaw slightly forward from its natural resting position, causing your throat tissue to tighten so that it does not collapse. It is very effective in preventing snoring and treating mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea. In some cases, surgery is necessary, but only for patients suffering from severe sleep apnea.
To learn more about our many treatment methods for sleep apnea, please contact Dr. Katz today to schedule a consultation. He serves clients in the Herndon, Reston, and Arlington, Virginia area.
