Every year, countless people avoid visiting the dentist because of anxiety and negative past experiences.  Unfortunately, this can lead to larger dental issues that need more comprehensive care to solve.
Dr. Abraham Katz wants all of his patients to feel comfortable during their visits so they can have a pain-free and relaxing dental experience.  For this reason, he provides a full range of sedation dentistry options to aid anyone experiencing anxiety about visiting the dentist.
Sedation dentistry might be a good option if you:
Have had a bad or painful past experience at the dentist.
Are afraid of needles, pain, fillings or dentistry in general.
Have a strong gag reflex.
Have trouble becoming numb.
Are embarrassed about the state of your teeth.
Need a lot of work done and would prefer to have it done in as few visits as possible.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Sedation dentistry has been used during millions of dental procedures and has safely produced amazing results for patients who would have otherwise struggled to have these procedures performed.

Any sedation done in our Herndon, Virginia office is performed by our board-certified anesthesiologists from Horizon Anesthesia who are specially trained with extensive experience in anesthesia.

Minimal sedation
For patients needing only a small amount of sedation, our anesthesiologists may choose to prescribe a drug used to treat symptoms of anxiety.  You will be relaxed and sleepy, but still able to respond to verbal communication and aware of your surroundings.

Moderate Sedation
Moderate sedation causes a depressed state of consciousness where you may feel sleepy and not remember your procedure, but you will be able to respond to verbal commands.  During any procedure using this method, all of your vital signs will be monitored by the anesthesiologist to ensure maximum safety.

Deep Sedation
For patients with larger procedures, we may choose to use deep sedation.  You will remember little if any of the procedure, but will be able to respond to stimulation. Supplemental oxygen will be administered and you will be closely monitored by the anesthesiologist.

General Anesthesia
The anesthesiologist will use gas or IV so that you slip into unconsciousness, at which point you will be closely monitored for the remainder of your procedure. Once Dr. Katz finishes, your anesthesiologist will carefully help you regain consciousness.  When you wake up, you will have a brand-new, beautiful smile!
